I am in the military and recently hired Captain Van Lines to move my family from NC to VA. There were numerous issues with the move, Which I will detail below. The bottom line is that no one should use this company.
Captain Van Lines is not a moving company, but instead a broker that hires random sub-contractors to do their jobs. They do not make this clear at the time they are hired and instead lead you to believe that they are a unified company with their own staff and trucks. As a result, you will get whoever shows up and there is no standard. The guy that showed up at my place was wholly unprofessional, barely spoke English, and hired a bunch of guys off of Craigslist as laborers.
The laborers (and maybe the contractor himself) proceeded to steal about $4k worth of my household goods. On top of that, the contractor showed up late, had acted like he had no idea what paperwork needed to be signed and improperly (or intentionally) explained that I should sign in conflicting places on the bill of lading which lead to issues claiming my losses down the road.
The contractor failed to get the weight tickets that were prescribed in the contract, which required me to repeatedly request them from the Captain. I'm pretty sure they just forged them after the fifth or sixth time I called, because they kept acting like they didn't have them then came up with it all of a sudden.
Upon delivery, I noticed that some obvious things were missing and questioned the contractor about the whereabouts. He said that they must have been stollen off of his truck when it was parked overnight. All together I had about $3,600 worth of things stollen by the contractor or his laborers. When I attempted to get reimbursed for this the company said that since I had signed in both the "full replacement" and "partial replacement" sections, but not paid for the "full replacement" insurance that I was not entitled to reimbursement for my losses. This was not explained to me at any point and so despite paying the full amount owed I am now only able to claim about 50 bucks worth of losses.
